David Hamilton - Tendres Cousines AKA Cousins In Love (1980)

29f7c043f76a2bde437fd0d52a185152

Synopsis:
Summer 1939 in the Provence, France: the 14 years old Julien has a crush on his cousin Julia, who lives together with his family in their small hotel. Unfortunately she ignores him, because she's several years older. Then the hotel guest Charles enters the competition, a slimy twenty-something who lusts for the girl, despite the fact that he's engaged.

Review:
Tendres Cousines starts with a monologue – a very long monologue – in which Julien (Thierry Tevini) introduces us to still images of the characters that we will meet over the course of the film. A lot of characters – some of them very minor – are introduced at this point, and too much information is dumped on the audience for anyone to take it all in. All you really need to know at this point is that everyone in this French country house fancies someone they shouldn’t.

And then we’re off.

This film is a bit of an oddity in that it tries to straddle several, not entirely complementary, genres. It’s essentially a sexploitation tinged coming of age story in which Julien and his cousin, Julia (Anja Schüte) discover their sexuality and their feelings for each other – as well as the rest of the household – against the background of a very pronounced class divide. While the middle class members of the two families are repressed, refined, frustrated and often predatory, the servants of the household are both raunchy and open and a lot more straightforward.

Of course, when hormonal teenagers find themselves in an environment packed with upfront shagging, there are opportunities for broad – very broad – humour, and the film does include some farcical scenes of the type that wouldn’t be out of place in a typical Carry On film. Apart from the explicit nudity, of course.

And, if this was all that the film had aspired to – a sexploitation comedy - I would have probably enjoyed it for what it was. However, watching this left me with the rather unfortunate impression that director David Hamilton would like us to take the film more seriously than it deserves.

The film is set in 1939, just before the outbreak of war, and we do have a few references to events going on in the wider world. But if this was a stab at injecting some drama into the film, it’s a rather half-hearted one and one that undermines both the comedy and sexploitation elements that make up the rest of the film.

The result is a film which, while being pretty to look at doesn’t really work as a film. It’s mildly titillating rather than erotic, silly rather than funny and pedestrian rather than dramatic.

David Hamilton is quite well regarded as a photographer and I don’t doubt that his soft-focus style works perfectly well on the page. Unfortunately, being a competent photographer doesn’t necessarily translate into an affinity for either character or narrative, as this film amply demonstrates.

Amazon review:
This movie is about a sculptor who loves "making" statues and paintings of young nudes. He becomes obsessed with the daughter (Laura) of a friend, whom he knew a long time ago. He manages to get her mother to take pictures of her for him to use in making a sculpture of her body. Laura develops a crush on him (as did her mother) and after he is blinded, offers to help him finish the statue that he started by posing for him herself. He's able to finish the clay sculpture by using his hands to feel along her body. They both get caught up in the moment and she becomes a women.

Those who argue about the plot or dialogue have missed the point of a David Hamilton movie. They simply don't get it. At any rate, there are a few story plots intertwined in this movie if you can pick them out.

And as for adolescent beauty, it is evident to all who have a discerning eye. The preteens and teens in this movie are among the prettiest (face and body) ever to be in a David Hamilton movie (or his books). This movie caused a lot of controversy when it was first released. Dawn Dunlpa (Laura) went on to appear in other movies such as "Forbidden World" where once again her body (total nudity) is on display for all to see.

This movie contains a lot of preteen nudity (front and rear) of girls in the shower and you do get to see quite a bit of a young and beautiful Dawn Dunlap (full nudity).

As with all gatekeeper reviews, which are concerned only with adult themes, nudity and violence - this movie contains preteen nudity and sexual situations. If you're a David Hamilton or Dawn Dunlap fan, this movie is a must. If you do not appreciate preteen nudity or are unable to view it as artistic, then do not buy this movie.

Three young women on a holiday with friends decide to visit a nearby island, risking a dangerous night time trip by boat. As a storm moves in, the boat is dashed against a beach, and the girls separated. Lost and soaked through, they are saved by some local boys. Now safe, the girls decide to spend time basking on the beach and exploring the island. They experience the first stirrings of love during a Mediterranean vacation as each girl follows her own path with local boys, the husband of a beautiful pianist, with another girl or dreaming on a platonic love.

REVIEW
RottenTomatoes
Though better known for his still photography than for his work in film, David Hamilton explores similar themes in each medium. Because his favorite subjects tend to be nude young girls, Hamilton has endured much criticism (especially in the United States). His books, like those of fellow photographer Sally Mann, have enlisted much controversy because of the provocative way in which they depict young people. Unphased by his critics, Hamilton has progressed to create a large body of work that includes several soft-core erotica films. With the stunningly shot PREMIERS DESIRS, Hamilton turns once again to familiar ideas and images. The film--which revolves around three young girls adjusting to adolescence and their own sexuality after being stranded by a boat wreck in the Mediterranean--explores issues of innocence, purity, and sexuality. While many object to Hamilton's subject matter, it can't be denied that he addresses all his work with true eye of an artist, creating visually appealing images through careful manipulation of color and light. By infusing his films with such visual sensitivity, Hamilton makes an argument in support of his claim that erotica and pornography are two very different things.
